There is no lee-bow effect A boat sailing in current will experience a wind direction and velocity dependent on the Continuecombination of the true wind and the current. That wind direction, will be the same on all points of sailing. A full explanation is given in "Winning in one-designs" by Dave Perry. He shows for example that a 10 knot northerly wind (360 degrees) and a 2 knot current flowing towards due west (270 degrees), will produce a wind direction of 349 degrees at a velocity of 10.2 knots for a boat sailing in those conditions. However when the current varies across the course there are gains to be made. |
